If the Lower Berth is the “living room” of an Indian Railways coach, then the UB (Upper Berth) is the penthouse. Itโs the highest sleeping level in the cabin, offering a private escape from the chaos of the aisle.
In technical terms, the UB is the third tier in a 3-Tier AC or Sleeper coach and the second tier in a 2-Tier AC coach. It is designed for passengers who prefer to “climb and disappear” until they reach their destination.
The Coach Layout: Where is the UB?
In a standard 3-Tier (3A or SL) compartment, the berths are arranged vertically. The UB is positioned directly above the Middle Berth (MB) and the Lower Berth (LB).

Seat Numbering Logic: In most 72-berth coaches, the UB numbers follow a pattern: 3, 6, 11, 14, 19, 22, 27, 30… and so on.
Fact Check: Myths vs. Reality
| Feature | Myth | Reality |
| Sleeping Hours | You can only sleep at night. | False. Unlike the Middle Berth, the UB is fixed. You can sleep or lie down at any time of the day. |
| Sitting Space | You can sit comfortably. | Partial. In 3-Tier coaches, the vertical gap is narrow; most adults have to slouch or sit at an angle. |
| Safety | Itโs easy to fall off. | False. All UBs are equipped with safety brackets, metal railings, or heavy-duty straps to prevent falls. |
| Temperature | It’s the warmest berth. | It depends. In AC coaches, itโs often the coldest (near vents). In Sleeper (non-AC), it can be the warmest as hot air rises. |
The Pros and Cons of the Upper Berth
The Advantages (Why people love it)
- Total Privacy: Once youโre up there, you are out of the line of sight of passing passengers and ticket examiners.
- Uninterrupted Sleep: You don’t have to wait for the person on the Lower Berth to finish their meal or for the Middle Berth to be folded up.
- Security: It is much harder for someone to snatch a bag or phone from an Upper Berth while you are asleep compared to the Lower Berth.
- Personal Space: Itโs the perfect spot for introverts or solo travelers who want to binge-watch movies or read without being disturbed.
The Disadvantages (Why people avoid it)
- The “Mountaineering” Aspect: Climbing the ladder requires decent physical fitness. It is not recommended for senior citizens, people with joint pain, or small children.
- Headroom: You cannot sit upright to work on a laptop or eat a meal comfortably.
- AC Chill: If you are in an AC coach, the vent blows directly onto the UB. If you don’t have a good blanket, youโll be shivering by midnight.
Quick Booking Tip
If you are a young traveler and want to ensure you aren’t asked to “adjust” your seat for others during the day, always opt for the UB (Upper Berth) or SU (Side Upper). They are the only berths that allow you to lie down 24/7 without negotiating with your co-passengers.
